Students are less prepared when they enter the job market because they have not had sufficient hands-on, real-world industry experience. This not only makes them less desirable to potential employers but it impacts their confidence level and self-worth as a potential employee.

Cultural change in attitude

Society’s overall confidence in higher education seems to be waning. Some people worry that they will commit their time and money only to buried under an avalanche of debt and unable to gain employment in a weak and very unpredictable job market.

Fewer college-age students

The biggest structural reason is simple: there are fewer 18 year olds today. Birth rates dropped sharply after the Great Recession, and that cohort is now reaching college age.
